Whale View Point Shoreline Enhancement

Beach with people at Whale View Point.

In 2007, the La Jolla Conservancy (LJC) received a $15,000.00 Grant from the Mark B. Wallner Foundation to prepare a plan to implement the enhancement of the shoreline at Whale View Point in La Jolla. This point is a rocky promontory with small pocket beaches and tide pools backed by bluffs with a combination of natural and improved park areas. It is also known as "Hospital Point" a namesake from the original Scripps Hospital located between 100 and 600 Coast Boulevard.

The goal is to carry out the recommendations of the La Jolla Coastline Plan, prepared in 1991 as a result of a public workshop to address the preservation, restoration and enhancement of the La Jolla Shoreline. The LJC hired landscape architect Jim Neri who conducted community workshops and meetings as part of the preparation of a Conceptual Plan. Based upon that plan, the LJC met with representatives from local and state agencies on site to seek their input. With all of this information, in 2009 the LJC requested proposals to complete the study and plans for the permits and funding necessary to complete the project. The La Jolla Conservancy has selected the firm of Spurlock – Poirier Landscape Architects to serve as its consultants during the implementation phase.

The Scripps Park Project

The goal is the creation of a long term master plan for Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Park. To date the LJC has assisted by consulting the group on existing planning documents, local history, fund raising, public workshop procedures, and selection of a professional facilitator to conduct a public workshop. We are also serving as a fund control agency to manage donations being given by the community to pay for that effort. Additionally LJC has made a $1000 dollar donation to the Scripps Park Project and provided the La Jolla Conservancy’s professional services pro bono.
